About the area
District VII is overflowing with history, culture and art. Dohány utca was the border of the Budapest Ghetto during WWII and is now part of the Jewish Quarter. Today this area is considered to be the beating heart of Pest, making it the most hip part of the city. Several synagogues lie within the district, including The Dohány Street Synagogue, which is the second largest in Europe. This great building holds the Jewish Museum and The Tree of Life, a beautiful Holocaust Memorial.
In the year 2000 they came up with a great use for neglected and uninhabited buildings of the area and ruin pubs were opened one after another. The once empty rooms and corridors are now decorated with lanterns, retro furniture, bicycles hanging from the ceiling, bathtubs made into chairs and so on. These magical and captivating bars are worth a visit any part of the day. Just take a walk along Kazinczy Street where you’ll find the legendary Szimpla Kert, along with many other great ruin bars, such as Ellátó Kert and Kőleves.
Enjoy exploring the Jewish Quarter’s hidden treasures!
